Founders
· Founded 1910 · Turin, Piedmont, Italy
In 1906, French automobile pioneer Alexandre Darracq established an Italian assembly factory in Naples to build French cars for the Italian market. However, sales were disastrous: Italian drivers demanded powerful, stylish cars capable of conquering steep Alpine passes, not flimsy French economy carriages. Italian investor Cavalier Ugo Stella stepped in, moved the factory to the Portello district of Milan in 1909, and founded *Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili* (A.L.F.A.) on June 24, 1910. Stella immediately hired brilliant surveyor and engineer Giuseppe Merosi to design the company's first true Italian car: the 24 HP, which instantly entered the grueling Targa Florio mountain race. When World War I erupted in 1914, car production halted. In December 1915, Neapolitan industrialist, mathematician, and mining magnate Nicola Romeo acquired a majority stake in the company, repurposing the Portello plant to manufacture munitions, aircraft engines, and portable compressors for the Italian war effort. After the armistice in 1918, Romeo invested his wartime profits back into car manufacturing, rebadging the company in 1920 as 'Alfa Romeo'. In 1923, Alfa Romeo driver Ugo Sivocci—tired of coming in second place—painted a green four-leaf clover (*Quadrifoglio*) on a white triangle on his RL race car before winning the Targa Florio, launching the good-luck racing symbol that adorns every high-performance Alfa Romeo to this day.
