Ugo Stella

Ugo Stella was an aristocrat with a strong background in business administration and industrial management. His critical experience serving as the managing director and an investor in the Società Italiana Automobili Darracq gave him intimate knowledge of the Portello factory's capabilities, its workforce, and the specific reasons why the French cars were failing in the Italian market, allowing him to successfully pivot the business.

Cavaliere Ugo Stella was an Italian aristocrat and entrepreneur who officially founded A.L.F.A. (Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili), the company that became Alfa Romeo. Stella originally served as the managing director for the Italian subsidiary of the French automaker Darracq. When Darracq's operations failed in 1909 and the parent company withdrew, Stella refused to let the factory close. On June 24, 1910, he joined with local investors to purchase the Portello factory and its assets, officially launching A.L.F.A. He immediately hired engineer Giuseppe Merosi to design a new car tailored specifically to the Italian market, resulting in the successful 24 HP model and cementing Stella as the driving force who preserved the factory and birthed the legendary marque.
