Nicola Romeo

Born in Sant'Antimo in 1876, Nicola Romeo earned degrees in civil and electrical engineering from the Politecnico di Napoli, followed by further engineering studies in Belgium. He gained deep industrial experience working abroad for railway companies before founding his own successful machinery importation firm in Milan. This background in heavy industrial engineering and capital acquisition provided him the financial leverage to purchase A.L.F.A.

Nicola Romeo was an Italian engineer and entrepreneur who acquired A.L.F.A. and transformed it into the iconic, high-performance brand known as Alfa Romeo. In 1915, during World War I, Romeo acquired a majority stake in the struggling automaker, pivoting its production to military machinery to support the war effort. Following the war, he reorganized the company as Società Anonima Italiana Nicola Romeo & C. and resumed car production, officially rebranding the cars to 'Alfa Romeo' in 1920. Romeo possessed a brilliant vision for marketing, utilizing motorsport to prove the superiority of his cars. He recruited legendary figures like Enzo Ferrari and engineer Vittorio Jano, leading Alfa Romeo to dominate 1920s motorsport, including winning the inaugural World Automobile Championship.
