Alexandre Darracq

Born in Bordeaux in 1855, Alexandre Darracq began his career as a draftsman at the Tarbes Arsenal before transitioning to manufacturing sewing machines and bicycles. His deep background in mechanical engineering and early mass-production techniques allowed him to successfully launch the Gladiator Cycle Company, which provided him with the capital and manufacturing expertise to enter the burgeoning automobile industry.

Pierre-Alexandre Darracq was a prominent French engineer and automobile entrepreneur whose early business ventures provided the infrastructure that eventually became Alfa Romeo. Darracq was an early champion of mass motor vehicle production, running successful cycle and automotive companies in France. In 1906, seeking to expand, he founded the Società Anonima Italiana Darracq (S.A.I.D.) in Milan, Italy, to manufacture his French-designed cars. However, the cars were ill-suited for the Italian market and sold poorly, leading Darracq to withdraw from the venture in 1909. While he did not found Alfa Romeo itself, the factory he built at Portello and the staff he employed were subsequently purchased by local investors to form A.L.F.A., making Darracq the essential precursor to the brand.
