Zepto was born out of the acute lockdown challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic in Mumbai in 2020. Childhood friends and computer science prodigies Aadit Palicha and Kaivalya Vohra, then 18 years old, had secured admission to Stanford University. Stranded in Mumbai due to pandemic travel restrictions, they watched their elderly neighbors struggle to procure basic fresh groceries, while traditional delivery apps took 3 to 7 days to deliver slotted orders. The duo initially launched KiranaKart, a delivery app partnering with local neighborhood mom-and-pop grocery stores (kiranas). However, KiranaKart suffered from poor inventory visibility, slow shopkeeper packing, and frequent stockouts. Realizing that the only way to guarantee consistency, speed, and 99%+ fill rates was to own the inventory and warehouse layout end-to-end, the founders abandoned the kirana aggregator model. They designed a 2,500-square-foot dedicated dark store in Mumbai, optimized inventory placement via algorithms, and launched Zepto in July 2021 with a promise to deliver groceries in 10 minutes. The service went viral across Mumbai and Bengaluru, scaling into a multi-billion-dollar enterprise before the founders turned 22.
