In 2019, Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani recognized that despite the rise of foreign e-commerce giants Amazon and Walmart-owned Flipkart, over 90% of India's $800 billion retail economy was still controlled by 15 million independent, family-run neighborhood mom-and-pop grocery stores (kiranas). Rather than attempting to destroy these small merchants through predatory pricing, Ambani conceived an innovative Online-to-Offline (O2O) partnership model: what if Reliance digitized these kiranas, turning every neighborhood shop into a modern digital retail hub? In December 2019, Reliance launched JioMart in pilot regions across Navi Mumbai, Kalyan, and Thane. In April 2020, amidst nationwide pandemic lockdowns, Facebook (now Meta) invested $5.7 billion in Jio Platforms, forging a landmark partnership to integrate JioMart directly into WhatsApp. Launching nationwide in May 2020, JioMart transformed Indian grocery shopping, allowing grandmother and college student alike to order daily vegetables and staples via a simple WhatsApp text message.
