Company History
Founded 2015 in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India
Vidit Aatrey and Sanjeev Barnwal met as undergraduate engineering students at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, graduating in 2012. Aatrey worked in operations and strategy at ITC Limited and later at ride-hailing unicorn InMobi, while Barnwal worked as an embedded software engineer at Sony Mobile in Tokyo, Japan. In mid-2015, both quit their corporate careers with a burning ambition to build a tech startup. In December 2015, they launched 'Fashnear' in Bengaluru—a hyperlocal fashion app that allowed consumers to order clothes from nearby physical boutiques for instant home delivery. The model failed rapidly because boutique owners had erratic inventory and consumers wanted broader selection. While visiting small garment shops in Bengaluru and Surat, the founders noticed a fascinating behavioral trend: boutique owners were snapping smartphone photos of apparel, sharing them in WhatsApp groups with dozens of housewives, and collecting payments via bank transfers. Aatrey and Barnwal realized that social commerce was already happening organically at massive scale—it just lacked technology, reliable courier shipping, and return management. They pivoted, rebranded the company to 'Meesho', and built a software platform that allowed any individual to launch an online reselling business from their kitchen table with zero inventory investment. In 2016, Meesho was accepted into Y Combinator, sparking its multi-billion-dollar ascent.
Since its establishment in 2015, Meesho expanded from an early-stage venture into a recognized leader in E-Commerce, Social Commerce, Digital Marketplaces, Value Retail, Logistics & Consumer Internet, overcoming key market challenges.
Over its history, Meesho executed decisive strategic pivots toward scalable monetization and digital distribution, securing its current market leadership.
By continually modernizing operations and embracing workflow automation, Meesho maintains resilience through changing technological and economic cycles.
