Company History
Founded 2008 in Gurugram, Haryana, India
In late 2007, Deepinder Goyal and Pankaj Chaddah, both graduates of IIT Delhi working as management consultants at Bain & Company's New Delhi office, noticed a persistent daily workplace problem: during lunch breaks, colleagues stood in long lines in the cafeteria waiting to look at a small stack of physical restaurant takeout menus. Goyal began collecting menus from nearby restaurants in Hauz Khas and Connaught Place, scanning them into high-resolution PDFs, and hosting them on Bain's internal intranet. The portal became an instant sensation among employees. Recognizing the commercial potential of a consumer-facing restaurant directory, Goyal and Chaddah launched Foodiebay.com in July 2008. By late 2008, Foodiebay was cataloging thousands of restaurants across Delhi NCR, Mumbai, and Kolkata. In November 2010, Sanjeev Bikhchandani, founder of Info Edge (Naukri.com), recognized the company's viral user traction and invested $1 million in Series A funding. The founders rebranded the platform to 'Zomato'—a catchy, rhyming alternative to tomato—laying the groundwork for global expansion and the eventual food delivery transformation.
Since its establishment in 2008, Zomato expanded from an early-stage venture into a recognized leader in Food Delivery, Quick Commerce, Restaurant Discovery, B2B Food Supply, Live Events & Consumer Internet, overcoming key market challenges.
Over its history, Zomato executed decisive strategic pivots toward scalable monetization and digital distribution, securing its current market leadership.
By continually modernizing operations and embracing workflow automation, Zomato maintains resilience through changing technological and economic cycles.
