Company History
Founded 2014 in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India
In 2013, Harshil Mathur and Shashank Kumar, close friends and batchmates who had graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee, were working in corporate roles—Mathur at Schlumberger in oilfield services and Kumar at Microsoft in Redmond as a software engineer. The duo decided to build a crowdfunding platform in India to help school and college students raise money for social and academic projects. However, when they attempted to integrate a payment gateway to collect donations, they hit a brick wall. Every Indian bank and payment aggregator required a registered physical office, audited financial statements for three years, thousands of dollars in non-refundable setup fees, and weeks of in-person verification. Recognizing that the payments infrastructure was fundamentally broken for the entire generation of upcoming Indian internet startups, Mathur and Kumar abandoned the crowdfunding project to solve digital payments. Working out of a rented flat in Jaipur, they built the prototype of Razorpay: a sleek, API-driven payment gateway with zero setup fees, instant automated digital onboarding, and a responsive checkout form that worked on mobile web. In late 2014, they applied to Y Combinator and were accepted into the Winter 2015 batch in Mountain View, California, receiving early guidance and investment from Silicon Valley titans before returning to Bengaluru to conquer the Indian market.
Since its establishment in 2014, Razorpay expanded from an early-stage venture into a recognized leader in Financial Technology, Digital Payments, Neobanking, Merchant Acquiring, B2B SaaS & API Infrastructure, overcoming key market challenges.
Over its history, Razorpay executed decisive strategic pivots toward scalable monetization and digital distribution, securing its current market leadership.
By continually modernizing operations and embracing workflow automation, Razorpay maintains resilience through changing technological and economic cycles.
