Company History
Founded 2015 in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India
In 2009, Sameer Nigam and Rahul Chari founded MIME360, a digital media distribution platform that was acquired by Flipkart in 2011. Nigam became Flipkart's Senior VP of Engineering and later VP of Operations, while Chari served as VP of Supply Chain Technology. By late 2014, while managing the massive operational friction of Cash on Delivery at Flipkart, Nigam and Chari realized that physical cash was costing Indian e-commerce hundreds of millions of dollars in theft, accounting overhead, and courier delays. In 2015, they quit Flipkart to launch PhonePe, joined by long-time colleague Burzin Engineer. Working out of an office in Indiranagar, Bengaluru, they observed early prototype whitepapers released by the Reserve Bank of India regarding UPI. Recognizing that an open payment architecture linked directly to a citizen's bank account would render traditional wallets obsolete, the trio architected the PhonePe app to be the premier consumer gateway for UPI. Recognizing PhonePe's strategic value in solving digital payments for e-commerce, Flipkart co-founder Binny Bansal acquired PhonePe in April 2016—just four months after incorporation—funding its nationwide rollout while granting Nigam and Chari full operational autonomy to build an open ecosystem.
Since its establishment in 2015, PhonePe expanded from an early-stage venture into a recognized leader in Financial Technology, Mobile Payments, UPI Infrastructure, WealthTech, Insurance & Consumer Internet, overcoming key market challenges.
Over its history, PhonePe executed decisive strategic pivots toward scalable monetization and digital distribution, securing its current market leadership.
By continually modernizing operations and embracing workflow automation, PhonePe maintains resilience through changing technological and economic cycles.
