Company History
Founded 2010 in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, India
Vijay Shekhar Sharma was born in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, the son of a schoolteacher. Enrolling in the Delhi College of Engineering at age fifteen despite not knowing English, Sharma taught himself the language by reading English and Hindi books simultaneously. In 2000, Sharma founded One97 Communications, an enterprise mobile value-added services (VAS) company that delivered SMS ringtones, cricket scores, and news alerts to telecom subscribers. By 2009, observing the rapid rise of smartphones in China and the United States, Sharma realized that the future belonged to mobile payments. Facing skepticism from his board of directors, Sharma personally pledged $2 million of his own savings to launch a startup within One97. In August 2010, Paytm launched from a small office in Noida, offering prepaid mobile recharges. In 2014, Paytm secured a prepaid payment wallet license from the Reserve Bank of India, allowing consumers to store digital cash. The big turning point arrived in 2015 when Chinese e-commerce behemoth Alibaba Group and Ant Financial invested over $680 million, recognizing Paytm as India's Alipay. When demonetization hit India in November 2016, Paytm was already equipped with millions of merchant QR codes, scaling into a household brand that fundamentally transformed Indian retail.
Since its establishment in 2010, Paytm expanded from an early-stage venture into a recognized leader in Financial Technology, Digital Payments, Merchant Acquiring, Micro-Lending, Soundbox IoT & Consumer Internet, overcoming key market challenges.
Over its history, Paytm executed decisive strategic pivots toward scalable monetization and digital distribution, securing its current market leadership.
By continually modernizing operations and embracing workflow automation, Paytm maintains resilience through changing technological and economic cycles.
