In 2015 they left, along with Burzin Engineer, to start a payments company built around UPI, which NPCI was about to launch. Flipkart acquired PhonePe in April 2016, months before UPI went live. PhonePe launched its UPI app in August 2016, and November's demonetisation pushed Indians toward digital payments.

Who Founded PhonePe? FAQ

Who are the three founders of PhonePe and when was it established?

PhonePe was founded in December 2015 in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India, by three former Flipkart leaders: Sameer Nigam, Rahul Chari, and Burzin Engineer.

What company did the founders build and sell prior to PhonePe?

In 2009, Sameer Nigam, Rahul Chari, and Burzin Engineer co-founded MIME360, a digital media distribution and digital rights management platform. In 2011, Indian ecommerce giant Flipkart acquired MIME360, bringing the three founders into executive leadership roles at Flipkart.

What inspired the founders to create PhonePe in late 2015?

While at Flipkart, the founders saw that Cash-on-Delivery (COD) was the biggest barrier to Indian ecommerce growth due to high return and handling costs. When the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) published early specifications for the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in 2015, the founders realized it would transform payments and launched PhonePe.

When did Flipkart acquire PhonePe?

In April 2016, just four months after PhonePe was founded and before its public app launch, Flipkart acquired PhonePe, providing early seed capital and distribution backing while keeping the founders in autonomous operational control.

When was the PhonePe app officially launched on UPI?

The PhonePe app officially launched in August 2016 in partnership with YES Bank, becoming the very first UPI-enabled mobile payment application to launch on the UPI platform in India.

How did the 2016 Indian Demonetization accelerate PhonePe's early adoption?

Launching just two months prior to the November 2016 Demonetization of high-value cash notes, PhonePe experienced rapid consumer adoption as millions of Indians downloaded the app to link their bank accounts and make instant digital payments without cash.

What technical architecture choices made by the founders enabled large scale?

Rahul Chari and Burzin Engineer architected PhonePe on an asynchronous, reactive microservices architecture using open-source technologies (HBase, Kafka, Cassandra), enabling the platform to process over 10,000 transactions per second without database lockups.

What core corporate values did the founders instill at PhonePe?

The founders established a corporate culture based on 'Trust, Reliability, and Simplicity', focusing on zero-failure transaction reliability, transparent user communication, and engineering strong financial infrastructure for Indian mass reality.
