In early 2018, Shashvat Nakrani, a third-year undergraduate engineering student at IIT Delhi, and Bhavik Koladiya, an experienced software developer, were studying the newly launched Unified Payments Interface (UPI) protocols. They observed that while NPCI designed UPI to be completely open and interoperable, tech giants like Paytm and PhonePe were deliberately locking merchants into closed-loop ecosystems, charging hefty fees when consumers paid from digital wallets. Nakrani and Koladiya realized that an open, interoperable QR code that charged 0% Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) would be irresistible to small shopkeepers. Realizing they needed experienced financial leadership to pitch venture capitalists and navigate banking alliances, they recruited Ashneer Grover—a decorated IIM Ahmedabad alumnus who had served as Chief Financial Officer at Grofers and Director of Corporate Development at American Express. Incorporating Resilient Innovations in March 2018, the trio walked into thousands of neighborhood retail shops across Delhi NCR, personally pasting BharatPe QR stickers on merchant counters. The proposition was unbeatable: zero commission, one QR code for all apps, and next-morning bank settlement. When merchants asked how BharatPe would make money, Grover explained that BharatPe would provide them with instant loans based on their transaction history. By late 2018, venture capital giant Peak XV Partners (Sequoia India) led a $2 million seed round, propelling BharatPe into hyper-growth.
