Following the historic $400 million acquisition of FreeCharge by Snapdeal in April 2015, Kunal Shah spent three years traveling the world, studying sociology, behavioral economics, and consumer psychology. Shah observed a striking paradox: in developed economies like the United States, Germany, and Singapore, high systemic trust allowed frictionless commerce, lower interest rates, and seamless credit. In India, however, trust was practically zero: landlords demanded massive security deposits, banks treated applicants with suspicion, and commercial contracts were bogged down by bureaucratic verification. Furthermore, Shah realized that while 1.4 billion people lived in India, the economic reality was that the top 30 to 40 million individuals accounted for virtually all discretionary consumer spending, luxury travel, and credit card debt. In April 2018, Shah incorporated Dreamplug Technologies in Bengaluru to build CRED. The founding thesis was contrarian: build a community exclusively for creditworthy individuals with a credit score above 750. Rather than charging users a subscription, CRED offered them a beautifully designed iOS and Android app that analyzed their credit card statements, eliminated hidden bank fees, alerted them to upcoming due dates, and rewarded on-time payments with CRED Coins redeemable for luxury products. Launched publicly in November 2018, CRED became an overnight viral sensation among tech workers and executives across Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Delhi.
CRED was founded in 2018 by Kunal Shah in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India.
The founders established CRED with the objective of solving core inefficiencies in FinTech, Credit Card Payments, Premium Consumer Rewards, Neo-Lending & Digital Financial Services, laying the foundation for its current global scale.
Even as CRED scales to $310M, the organization maintains the founders' commitment to innovation and customer-centric execution.
