BharatPe (Resilient Innovations Private Limited) is one of the most audacious and consequential disruptors in modern Indian financial technology. Founded in March 2018 in New Delhi by twenty-year-old IIT Delhi dropout Shashvat Nakrani, Bhavik Koladiya, and seasoned finance executive Ashneer Grover, BharatPe attacked an absurd market failure: in 2018, an Indian merchant counter was cluttered with four or five separate QR code stands—one for Paytm, one for PhonePe, one for Google Pay, and one for Mobikwik. Merchants had to maintain separate accounts, pay high transaction fees (MDR) on wallet transactions, and wait days for settlements. BharatPe introduced a historic breakthrough: **India's first single, interoperable UPI QR code**. With a single BharatPe sticker, a shopkeeper could accept money from any payment app in India for free, with funds settling into their existing bank account overnight. By using payment acquiring as a zero-cost hook, BharatPe monetized what merchants desperately needed: unsecured working capital loans disbursed without collateral. In 2021, BharatPe executed an unprecedented regulatory triumph: partnering with Centrum Financial Services to acquire the distressed Punjab & Maharashtra Co-operative (PMC) Bank and secure an RBI license to launch **Unity Small Finance Bank**—making BharatPe the only fintech unicorn in India to co-own a scheduled commercial bank. Despite dramatic corporate governance battles that resulted in the departure of Ashneer Grover in 2022, BharatPe underwent a disciplined institutional turnaround under CEO Nalin Negi, serving over 13 million merchants and achieving operational profitability.
BharatPe operates a high-margin merchant credit and financial services model: providing free interoperable UPI payment acquiring as a customer acquisition wedge, while monetizing through interest rate spreads on unsecured merchant working capital loans (18% to 30% APR, co-originated with NBFCs and Unity SFB), daily loan collection processing fees, BharatSwipe POS hardware rentals and acquiring MDR, and Soundbox subscriptions.
BharatPe navigated severe corporate governance controversies and high-profile boardroom disputes in 2022 surrounding former managing director Ashneer Grover, requiring a comprehensive institutional restructuring, audit reviews, and management reconstitution, alongside intense competition from Paytm, PhonePe, and Pine Labs in merchant offline hardware.
Nalin Negi currently leads BharatPe, overseeing strategic vision, balance sheet health, and organizational execution in Financial Technology, Merchant Acquiring, Micro-Lending, Digital Banking, POS Hardware & Consumer Internet.
Under executive direction, BharatPe is prioritizing workflow automation alongside disciplined capital allocation to maximize shareholder value.
Leadership at BharatPe has historically navigated industry cycles by restructuring operational priorities and expanding competitive moats.
