Razorpay (Razorpay Software Private Limited) is the foundational financial plumbing powering the Indian digital internet economy. Founded in 2014 by two young IIT Roorkee computer science graduates, Harshil Mathur and Shashank Kumar, Razorpay emerged out of sheer frustration with the broken state of Indian online payment gateways. In 2014, an Indian startup founder seeking to accept credit cards online had to wait thirty days, submit reams of physical notarized paperwork to public-sector banks, pay hefty non-refundable setup fees, and endure payment failure rates exceeding 40%. Mathur and Kumar envisioned a modern, developer-centric payment gateway modeled after Stripe, where a developer could sign up online, copy a few lines of JavaScript code, and start accepting payments within thirty minutes. After becoming only the second Indian startup ever accepted into Silicon Valley's Y Combinator accelerator in 2015, Razorpay launched its platform, triggering an immediate sensation among developers. Over the subsequent decade, Razorpay expanded aggressively into corporate payouts, current accounts, automated payroll, working capital credit, and offline POS card machines. Today, processing more than $150 billion in annualized Total Payment Volume across 10 million merchants, Razorpay is valued at over $7.5 billion.
Razorpay operates a transaction-fee and subscription SaaS business model: charging merchant discount rates (MDR, typically 1.5% to 2% on credit cards, net banking, and wallets), fees on cross-border transactions, SaaS subscription tiers on RazorpayX payroll and corporate credit cards, loan origination spreads via Razorpay Capital, and hardware terminal fees on Razorpay POS.
Razorpay navigates regulatory scrutiny under Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Payment Aggregator guidelines, merchant fee compression on domestic zero-MDR UPI transactions, rising fraud and chargeback mitigation costs, and competition from Cashfree, Pine Labs, and PayU.
Harshil Mathur currently leads Razorpay, overseeing strategic vision, balance sheet health, and organizational execution in Financial Technology, Digital Payments, Neobanking, Merchant Acquiring, B2B SaaS & API Infrastructure.
Under executive direction, Razorpay is prioritizing workflow automation alongside disciplined capital allocation to maximize shareholder value.
Leadership at Razorpay has historically navigated industry cycles by restructuring operational priorities and expanding competitive moats.
