In early 2007, Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal (no relation, both graduates of the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi) were working as software engineers at Amazon Web Services in Bengaluru. They recognized that while Amazon dominated Western retail, India's fragmented retail market was completely unserved by modern e-commerce. Quitting their corporate engineering jobs with just ₹400,000 ($9,000) in personal savings, they incorporated Flipkart in October 2007. Operating out of a two-bedroom flat in Koramangala, Bengaluru, the duo personally scoured local bookstores to fulfill early orders, wrapping books in brown paper and dropping them at post offices. Their uncompromising customer focus—such as tracking down rare academic textbooks for college students—sparked viral word-of-mouth growth. In 2009, early-stage venture capital pioneer Subrata Mitra of Accel India invested $1 million in seed funding, followed by Lee Fixel of Tiger Global. By investing aggressively in private logistics (Ekart), continuous smartphone flash sales, and massive festival events (The Big Billion Days), Flipkart evolved from a scrappy book retailer into a $35+ billion commercial titan.
