Founding Story

Vidit Aatrey and Sanjeev Barnwal, batchmates at IIT Delhi, first built Fashnear, a hyperlocal app for ordering clothes from neighbourhood stores. It did not take off. Talking to small shop owners, they saw sellers and homemakers sharing product photos over WhatsApp and Facebook and taking orders from friends. In 2016 they rebuilt the product as Meesho (from 'Meri Shop'), a platform that gave these resellers catalogues, payments and delivery, and joined Y Combinator's Summer 2016 batch.

Who Founded Meesho? FAQ

How did Vidit Aatrey and Sanjeev Barnwal meet and start their entrepreneurial journey?

Vidit Aatrey and Sanjeev Barnwal met as undergraduate engineering students at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, graduating in 2012. After gaining corporate engineering and operational experience at ITC, InMobi, and Sony, they reconnected in Bengaluru in 2015 with a shared dream of building a transformative Indian tech enterprise.

What was Fashnear and why was it the initial precursor to Meesho?

In mid-2015, Aatrey and Barnwal founded Fashnear, a hyperlocal fashion discovery app allowing consumers to order clothes from nearby physical retail shops delivered by local couriers within hours. However, the founders quickly realized local shops lacked digitized inventory and consumers preferred wider selection over instant delivery, prompting their pivot.

How did the founders discover the social commerce opportunity in Surat and Bengaluru?

While visiting wholesale textile markets in Surat and interviewing small merchants in Bengaluru, the founders noticed homemakers and micro-entrepreneurs taking photos of sarees, posting them in WhatsApp and Facebook groups, and collecting orders manually. They built Meesho in late 2015 to automate payments, inventory sharing, and doorstep delivery for these resellers.

What was Meesho's experience in the Y Combinator accelerator program?

In 2016, Meesho was selected for the prestigious Y Combinator Summer batch (YC S16) in Mountain View, California, becoming one of the earliest Indian startups accepted into the accelerator. YC provided foundational mentorship, investor connections, and seed capital to scale its social commerce model.

How did the founders divide executive responsibilities during hypergrowth?

Vidit Aatrey focused on corporate strategy, fundraising, business development, marketing, and category expansion as CEO, while Sanjeev Barnwal led engineering architecture, data science algorithms, cybersecurity, and product design as CTO.

What core founding insight enabled Meesho to build an enduring e-commerce moat?

The founders concluded that many new online shoppers in India wanted affordable, unbranded everyday goods sourced from small manufacturers and delivered cheaply, more than branded products or the fastest delivery.

How much of Meesho do the founders own?

Vidit Aatrey and Sanjeev Barnwal remain significant shareholders after the IPO. Forbes reported that the post-listing rally made Aatrey a billionaire.

Who founded Meesho?

It was founded by Vidit Aatrey and Sanjeev Barnwal. They are elite alumni of IIT-Delhi. Their massive breakthrough occurred when they were accepted into Y Combinator (the legendary Silicon Valley startup accelerator). They proved to Western investors that Indian e-commerce relies heavily on "social trust" (buying from a friend on WhatsApp), allowing them to secure the massive early funding needed to survive.
