Company History
Founded 1868 in Bombay House, 24 Homi Mody Street, Mumbai, Maharashtra, India
In 1868, 29-year-old Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, the son of a Parsi priest in Navsari, Gujarat, started a small trading firm in Mumbai with 21,000 rupees. After traveling to Manchester to study cotton manufacturing, Jamsetji founded the Central India Spinning, Weaving and Manufacturing Company in Nagpur in 1874 (the Empress Mills). Jamsetji envisioned four great nation-building pillars: a hydroelectric power company (Tata Power), an integrated iron and steel plant (Tata Steel in Jamshedpur), a world-class science university (Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru), and a grand luxury hotel (The Taj Mahal Palace in Mumbai, built in 1903). Jamsetji's visionary blueprint established Tata as the foundational industrial soul of modern India.
Jamsetji Tata is revered as the 'Father of Indian Industry'. In 1868, Tata founded the trading firm that established India's first modern textile mills, steel plants (TISCO), and power dams.
