Company History
Founded 1945 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India
In early 1945, Kailash Chandra (K.C.) Mahindra, who had served as the head of the Indian Supply Mission in Washington, D.C. during World War II, observed firsthand the industrial power of American mass production, particularly the rugged Willys Jeep used by Allied forces across global battlefields. Returning to India, K.C. Mahindra teamed up with his elder brother Jagdish Chandra (J.C.) Mahindra, an experienced industrial manager at Tata Steel, and their close friend Malik Ghulam Muhammad, a prominent chartered accountant and bureaucrat. On October 2, 1945 (the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi), they incorporated 'Muhammad & Mahindra' in Ludhiana, initially trading steel with American suppliers. In August 1947, India gained independence and suffered the violent partition of the subcontinent; Ghulam Muhammad relocated to Karachi, leaving the Mahindra brothers to rebuild the partnership in Mumbai as 'Mahindra & Mahindra' in 1948. K.C. Mahindra negotiated a historic agreement with Willys Overland to import completely knocked-down (CKD) kits and assemble Willys CJ-3A jeeps at an old dockyard warehouse in Mazagon, Mumbai. The first batch of 75 jeeps was assembled in 1949. Rugged, simple, and capable of traversing India's unpaved rural roads, the Mahindra-built Jeep became an indispensable tool for rural farmers, police departments, and government development workers, birthing an automotive legend.
