Founding Story
In 1945 two brothers and a partner started a steel trading business in India. After Partition in 1947 the partner left for Pakistan, and the brothers looked for a new line of business. India's poor roads called for a tough vehicle, so they obtained the rights to assemble the Willys Jeep in India. Building the Jeep there was the start of the Mahindra automotive business, which made durability its trademark.

J.C. Mahindra co-founded the company in 1945 as a steel trading corporation. He had previously served as India's first Steel Controller during WWII. Recognizing that a newly independent India would desperately need rugged transportation for its massive, unpaved rural landscape, he shifted the company to begin assembling Willys Jeeps under license, laying the foundation for India's largest SUV manufacturer.
