Company History
Founded 2008 in San Francisco, California, United States
The inception of Asana arose directly from the hyper-growth challenges inside Facebook in the late 2000s. Dustin Moskovitz, Facebook's co-founder and head of engineering, and Justin Rosenstein, a former Google product manager who joined Facebook as engineering lead, observed that as the company expanded from a few dozen engineers to thousands, employees were spending most of their time coordinating work rather than actually doing it. Endless email threads, outdated status spreadsheets, and disconnected meetings were paralyzing productivity. To fix this, Moskovitz and Rosenstein built an internal tool called 'Tasks' in their spare time, which quickly became the operational nervous system of Facebook. Realizing that every growing business on the planet suffered from the exact same coordination dilemma, the duo resigned from Facebook in 2008 to build an independent, universal work management platform, incorporating Asana (a Sanskrit word for 'seated posture' or ease in action).
Dustin Moskovitz is the co-founder, Chairman, and Chief Executive Officer of Asana, Inc. After helping scale Facebook from a Harvard dorm room into a global social network, Moskovitz left in 2008 to solve workplace coordination friction with Asana. For over 17 years, Moskovitz has guided Asana's product design, championed its Work Graph data architecture, and steered its 2020 NYSE public listing, while maintaining high personal equity conviction in the company's long-term future.
Justin Rosenstein is the co-founder and former product lead of Asana, Inc. Teaming with Dustin Moskovitz, Rosenstein conceived Asana's foundational mission to eliminate 'work about work.' He architected Asana's original user experience and Work Graph relational philosophy before transitioning to board member and philanthropic leadership with One Project.
