Company History
Founded 1984 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States
In 1984, Leslie Muma (head of Milwaukee-based First Data Processing) and George Dalton (head of First Midwest Data Corporation) recognized that the rapid deregulation of the US banking sector would trigger immense demand for specialized, third-party data processing. Community banks and regional savings-and-loan associations were struggling to afford multi-million-dollar mainframe computers to manage customer checking accounts and mortgage loans. Muma and Dalton merged their two regional processing firms on July 31, 1984, creating Fiserv. By pooling computing power, Fiserv offered community banks high-speed, automated account processing at a fraction of in-house IT costs. Listing on NASDAQ in 1986, Fiserv embarked on an aggressive acquisition strategy, rolling up over 150 financial software firms over three decades, establishing the technological foundation of modern American retail banking.
Leslie Muma was the Co-Founder and long-time Chief Executive Officer of Fiserv, Inc. In 1984, Muma partnered with George Dalton to merge First Data Processing with First Midwest Data, founding Fiserv. Muma guided Fiserv through its 1986 IPO and orchestrated over 100 successful technology acquisitions, establishing Fiserv as the preeminent core processor of the US banking industry before retiring in 1999.
George Dalton was the Co-Founder and Founding Chairman of Fiserv, Inc. Dalton contributed the corporate visionary strategy and sales acumen that convinced hundreds of skeptical community bank presidents to outsource their data processing to Fiserv. Dalton served as Chairman of Fiserv from 1984 to 2000, establishing the company's culture of operational reliability and client service.
