Company History
Founded 1989 in Cincinnati, Ohio, United States
The foundation of Worldpay was forged from two distinct payment innovations. In 1989, National Westminster Bank (NatWest) in the United Kingdom established Streamline, an electronic point-of-sale merchant payment service that pioneered early paperless credit card processing for British high-street retailers. Concurrently, in 1997 in Jersey, Channel Islands, British entrepreneur Nick Ogden recognized that the newly emerging World Wide Web lacked a secure, multi-currency electronic payment gateway. Ogden created Worldpay, establishing the world's first multi-currency online payment system. In 2002, the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), which had acquired NatWest and Streamline, purchased Worldpay and merged the two operations under the Worldpay brand, uniting Britain's largest physical merchant acquirer with the world's fastest-growing internet payment gateway.
