Company History
Founded 2014 in London, England, United Kingdom
In 2013, Anne Boden was serving as Chief Operating Officer of Allied Irish Banks (AIB), tasked with turning around the bailed-out institution. Visiting London's burgeoning fintech incubators, she was astonished to see startup founders building sleek mobile apps on top of existing bank rails. However, she realized that these apps were mere cosmetic veneers; behind the scenes, payments still took days to clear on decrepit 1970s mainframe computers. Boden realized that if someone built a bank entirely from scratch using cloud computing, real-time APIs, and automated compliance, they could deliver superior customer service at a fraction of the operating cost. In early 2014, at age 54, Boden stepped down from her corporate career and founded Starling. Despite early skepticism from venture capitalists who doubted a new bank could secure a UK banking license or compete with Barclays and HSBC, Boden secured backing from financial investor Harald McPike. In 2016, Starling was granted a full UK banking license by the Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA) and Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), launching its groundbreaking mobile current account in 2017.
Anne Boden MBE is a Welsh computer scientist, banking executive, and technology entrepreneur who founded Starling Bank in 2014. Over a thirty-year corporate banking career, she held senior executive positions at Standard Chartered, UBS, ABN AMRO, and served as Chief Operating Officer of Allied Irish Banks. In 2014, recognizing that legacy banks could not be reformed due to obsolete technology, she founded Starling Bank at age 54, becoming the first woman in British history to establish a clearing bank. Under her leadership, Starling secured a UK banking license, reached over 3.6 million accounts, and became the first profitable UK challenger bank. She stepped down as CEO in 2023, remaining a major shareholder and board member.
