Company History
Founded 2015 in London, England, United Kingdom
Revolut was founded in 2015 by Nikolay Storonsky and Vlad Yatsenko. Storonsky, an equity derivatives trader at Credit Suisse and Lehman Brothers in London, traveled frequently and noticed he was losing hundreds of pounds on every trip due to opaque currency conversion fees and poor exchange rates charged by high-street banks. Convinced that modern software could execute foreign exchange at the real interbank rate without human overhead, Storonsky partnered with Vlad Yatsenko, a seasoned financial systems software engineer at Deutsche Bank who built mission-critical trading infrastructure. Operating out of the Level39 fintech accelerator in Canary Wharf, London, they launched Revolut in July 2015 with a simple multi-currency app and prepaid card that allowed travelers to spend abroad with zero exchange fees. The product spread virally through word-of-mouth among digital nomads and frequent travelers, adding 100,000 users in its first six months and launching a global neobanking revolution. In 2014, inside a trading room in the City of London, Nik Storonsky looked at his bank statement in disgust. Having spent years trading currencies at Lehman Brothers and Credit Suisse, Storonsky knew the exact mid-market exchange rates down to fractions of a cent. Yet, for a two-week trip across Europe, his retail bank had skimmed hundreds of pounds in hidden FX fees. Storonsky quit his trading job and moved to Canary Wharf. Teaming up with Vlad Yatsenko, an elite software engineer from Deutsche Bank, they spent twelve months coding an in-memory ledger that connected directly to interbank currency order books. When they launched Revolut in July 2015, the fintech world changed forever: the power of institutional currency trading was placed directly into the hands of ordinary travelers worldwide.
Nik Storonsky is the co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Revolut Ltd. While traveling internationally as a derivatives trader, Storonsky was appalled to discover that banks were charging him hundreds of pounds in hidden foreign exchange fees and exchange markups. In 2015, alongside systems developer Vlad Yatsenko, Storonsky launched Revolut at Level39 in Canary Wharf to eliminate FX fees forever. Under Storonsky's relentlessly ambitious, mathematically rigorous leadership, Revolut grew from a pre-paid travel card into a $45.0 billion financial super-app generating over $2.2 billion in annual revenue with over $500 million in net profit. Storonsky is celebrated as one of the most commercially formidable financial entrepreneurs of the modern era. Storonsky's relentless, data-driven ambition made him one of the most formidable financial leaders of the 21st century. An unapologetic meritocrat with a background in theoretical physics and elite swimming, Storonsky steered Revolut through grueling regulatory battles, culture controversies, and global market expansions, transforming an early travel card into a $45.0 billion financial powerhouse generating over $500 million in annual profit ahead of a historic public debut.
Vlad Yatsenko is the co-founder and former Chief Technology Officer of Revolut. An extraordinary financial systems programmer, Yatsenko was the engineering genius who built Revolut's core banking ledger from scratch. At Revolut, Yatsenko engineered the real-time multi-currency ledger, wrote the low-latency payment processing pipelines that connect to Visa and Mastercard, and directed the cloud-native infrastructure that scaled to serve 45 million global users with sub-second execution speeds before transitioning to board-level advisory and technology investments. Yatsenko's mastery of high-throughput financial architectures was the technological bedrock that made Revolut possible. Drawing on a decade of systems engineering at UBS and Deutsche Bank, Yatsenko wrote the original in-memory multi-currency ledger, engineered the low-latency payment processing pipelines connecting to Visa and Mastercard, and ensured that 45 million users experienced sub-50ms transaction responsiveness across 30+ currencies with zero downtime.
