Anne Boden
Role at Starling Bank
Anne Boden MBE is a Welsh computer scientist, banking executive, and technology entrepreneur who founded Starling Bank in 2014. A graduate of Swansea University with a degree in computer science and chemistry, Boden began her career at Lloyds Bank, building early computer networks and automated teller systems. Over a thirty-year corporate banking career, she held senior executive positions at Standard Chartered, UBS, ABN AMRO, and served as Chief Operating Officer of Allied Irish Banks. In 2014, recognizing that legacy banks could not be reformed due to obsolete technology, she founded Starling Bank at age 54, becoming the first woman in British history to establish a clearing bank. Under her leadership, Starling secured a UK banking license, reached over 3.6 million accounts, and became the first profitable UK challenger bank. She stepped down as CEO in 2023, remaining a major shareholder and board member.
