Founding Story

Tom Blomfield, who had co-founded payments firm GoCardless and spent a short time at Starling Bank, left with several colleagues in early 2015 to start Mondo, a bank built for smartphones. The team issued prepaid cards in a bright hot coral colour so they would stand out when used. In 2016 Mondo raised ~$1.32 million (£1 million) from customers on Crowdcube in 96 seconds and renamed itself Monzo after a trademark dispute. It received its full UK banking licence in April 2017.
