UK-based digital mortgage broker.
Monzo's growth strategy has three parts: get more UK customers to make Monzo their main account, sell them more products (loans, Flex, savings, investments, pensions and paid plans), and expand into Europe using its EU banking licence, starting with Ireland. In April 2026 it chose to exit the US, saying it would focus on its home market and Europe; about 50 roles were affected.
Monzo makes money in four main ways. First, net interest income: it earns interest on customer deposits placed with the Bank of England and on its loan book of personal loans, overdrafts and Monzo Flex credit. Second, subscriptions: customers pay monthly for Monzo Extra, Perks and Max plans, which bundle perks such as insurance and higher savings rates. Third, fees and interchange from card spending and paid Monzo Business plans. Fourth, smaller lines such as investments, pensions and partner products. The free personal current account acts as the acquisition engine; Monzo says most new customers arrive through word of mouth, which keeps marketing costs low.
Monzo has not announced any significant acquisitions; it builds products in-house and uses partners such as BlackRock for investment funds.
Monzo has historically focused on organic product development and internal engineering rather than large-scale acquisitions, occasionally pursuing targeted acqui-hires and technology asset purchases.
Instead of acquiring external institutions, Monzo partners strategically with industry specialists such as Wise for international remittances, BlackRock for multi-asset funds, and Mojo Mortgages for home loan brokering.
By building its core banking ledger, transaction routing engine, and payment switch in-house from inception, Monzo avoided inheriting legacy technical debt from bolt-on software acquisitions.
Open Banking APIs allow Monzo to integrate external bank accounts, credit scores, and financial tools smoothly without requiring expensive capital-intensive corporate mergers.
In September 2026 Sky News reported talks with Nubank at ~$10.6 billion (£8 billion) to ~$13.2 billion (£10 billion). Nu Holdings later said it was not pursuing a deal, and no transaction has been announced.
Instead of licensing legacy off-the-shelf core banking systems (like Finacle or Temenos), Monzo engineered its entire banking ledger and infrastructure in-house. It operates over 2,500 modular Go-based microservices running on Kubernetes and Apache Cassandra, allowing engineering teams to deploy software updates dozens of times per day without downtime.
