Having founded Rimac Automobili in 2009 in a garage converting a 1984 BMW 3 Series into an electric racecar, Rimac negotiated the historic merger with Porsche AG and Volkswagen Group to form Bugatti Rimac in November 2021. He made the pivotal design and engineering decision to reject internal proposals for an all-electric Bugatti SUV, insisting instead that the Chiron's successor must feature an emotional, high-revving naturally aspirated 8.3-liter V16 engine paired with three Rimac electric motors—creating the 1,800-hp Bugatti Tourbillon.
