Company History
Founded 1904 in Goodwood, Chichester, West Sussex, United Kingdom
In the dawn of the automotive era in the early 1900s, British roads were dominated by noisy, unreliable, and smoky French and German motor carriages. Henry Royce, a brilliant self-taught electrical and mechanical engineer from Peterborough who ran an electrical dynamo factory in Manchester, was profoundly dissatisfied with his second-hand Decauville car. Royce took the car apart and rebuilt it from the ground up, engineering a twin-cylinder 10-horsepower engine that ran with such astonishing smoothness that a coin balanced on its radiator would not fall while the motor purred. Word of Royce's miraculous, silent engine reached The Honourable Charles Rolls, the wealthy third son of Lord Llangattock, who ran one of London's first high-end car dealerships and was an elite racing driver. On May 4, 1904, Rolls traveled by train to Manchester to meet Royce at the Midland Hotel. Over lunch, Rolls was so utterly captivated by Royce's engineering brilliance that he immediately agreed to take every car Royce could build, under the condition that they would be named 'Rolls-Royce'. In 1906, they incorporated Rolls-Royce Limited and launched the 40/50 hp 'Silver Ghost'. When the Silver Ghost completed a continuous 14,371-mile reliability trial under official observation with virtually zero mechanical defects, motoring journalists universally christened it 'The Best Car in the World'.
