· Founded 2011 · Mumbai, Maharashtra, India
In mid-2011, Ambareesh Murty and Ashish Shah—who had spent five years running eBay India, experiencing firsthand the immense scale and operational friction of Indian consumer e-commerce—decided to leave their corporate executive careers to build an independent business. While observing consumer shopping behavior, they noticed a striking anomaly: Indian consumers were enthusiastically buying books, mobile phones, and fashion online, but the enormous $20 billion home and furniture market remained entirely untouched by digital technology. To understand why, Murty and Shah spent months driving thousands of kilometers across Rajasthan, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh, visiting traditional woodworking clusters in Jodhpur, Jaipur, and Saharanpur. They discovered that India possessed world-class artisans capable of crafting magnificent solid wood furniture from seasoned Sheesham, teak, and mango wood, but these craftsmen were exploited by middlemen and had no access to affluent urban consumers in Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Delhi. In November 2011, Murty and Shah incorporated Pepperfry in Mumbai. Originally launching with fashion, jewelry, and home decor, the founders quickly realized that home and furniture was their true calling. In April 2013, Pepperfry made the bold strategic pivot to focus 100% on furniture and home decor. When customers expressed hesitation about buying expensive sofas without touching the fabric, Pepperfry opened its first experiential 'Studio Pepperfry' in Mumbai in December 2014, unlocking the explosive omnichannel growth that made Pepperfry a household name across India.
