Founders
· Founded 2008 · Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India
In 2007, Mithun Sacheti, whose family owned Jaipur Gems—a renowned heritage luxury jewelry house in Mumbai and Chennai known for crafting regal multi-crore bridal heirlooms—was managing the family's Chennai showroom. Sacheti noticed a striking shift: young women in their twenties and thirties were entering the workforce, earning their own salaries, and achieving financial independence. Yet, when they entered traditional jewelry stores, they felt alienated: salesmen ignored them unless accompanied by husbands or parents, and the inventory consisted entirely of heavy, traditional gold necklaces costing lakhs of rupees. Sacheti asked a radical question: why couldn't diamonds be bought online like books or electronics, with 100% transparent pricing and accessible designs under ₹25,000? Sacheti partnered with technology executive Srinivasa Gopalan to build CaratLane, launching in October 2008 with a catalog of certified loose diamonds and lightweight rings. In an era when most venture capitalists believed Indians would never buy expensive diamonds over the internet, Lee Fixel of Tiger Global recognized Sacheti's genius, investing $50 million between 2011 and 2014. In 2012, Sacheti introduced 'Try at Home'—sending jewelry consultants with physical samples to customers' living rooms—and opened CaratLane's first physical brick-and-mortar store in Delhi, unlocking the powerful omnichannel flywheel that propelled CaratLane into the Tata Group empire.
CaratLane was founded in 2008 by Mithun Sacheti, Srinivasa Gopalan in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India.
The founders established CaratLane with the objective of solving core inefficiencies in Fine Jewelry Retail, Omnichannel E-Commerce, Diamond & Gold Adornments, Luxury Lifestyle & D2C, laying the foundation for its current global scale.
