CaratLane (CaratLane Trading Private Limited) is the crowning jewel of modern Indian consumer retail and direct-to-consumer entrepreneurship. Founded in October 2008 in Chennai by Mithun Sacheti—a fourth-generation diamantaire and certified gemologist from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA)—and tech entrepreneur Srinivasa Gopalan, CaratLane was born to democratize the luxury of fine diamond jewelry. In 2008, purchasing diamond jewelry in India was an opaque, intimidating ordeal: family jewelers guarded prices behind glass counters, added inflated making charges, and focused almost exclusively on heavy, cumbersome wedding sets that spent their lives locked in bank vaults. Sacheti realized that modern, financially independent Indian women wanted something radically different: elegant, certified, lightweight diamond jewelry that could be worn every day to the office, brunch, or casual dinners. By pairing transparent online pricing with certified natural diamonds, CaratLane pioneered online fine jewelry in India. Recognized for its explosive growth and brand resonance, Titan Company Limited (the luxury lifestyle arm of the Tata Group) acquired a controlling stake in 2016, scaling CaratLane into a multi-thousand-crore powerhouse. In August 2023, Titan bought out founder Mithun Sacheti's remaining stake for ₹4,621 crore ($555 million) at a valuation exceeding $2 billion, sealing CaratLane's legacy as one of the greatest retail success stories in Indian corporate history.
CaratLane operates a highly profitable omnichannel retail and direct-to-consumer monetization model: designing, manufacturing, and retailing 14K and 18K certified gold, natural diamond, gemstone, and platinum jewelry across rings, earrings, pendants, mangalsutras, and bracelets. Monetization is driven by high retail gross margins (typically 32% to 38%), an integrated omnichannel flywheel where online discovery converts into offline retail store purchases, innovative services like 'Try at Home' appointment bookings, and children's jewelry via the CaratLane Kids sub-brand.
CaratLane navigates fluctuating international bullion prices for physical gold and uncut diamonds, intense competitive counter-offensives from traditional regional jewelers and digital challengers like Bluestone, and managing rapid retail store expansion across Tier 2 and Tier 3 Indian cities without diluting customer experience.
Saumen Bhaumik currently leads CaratLane, overseeing strategic vision, balance sheet health, and organizational execution in Fine Jewelry Retail, Omnichannel E-Commerce, Diamond & Gold Adornments, Luxury Lifestyle & D2C.
Under executive direction, CaratLane is prioritizing workflow automation alongside disciplined capital allocation to maximize shareholder value.
Leadership at CaratLane has historically navigated industry cycles by restructuring operational priorities and expanding competitive moats.
