· Founded 1925 · Mumbai, Maharashtra, India
In 1925, during the zenith of the British Raj, Albert James Raymond, an English merchant, established the Raymond Woollen Mill in Thane, near Bombay, to manufacture coarse woollen blankets and uniforms for the British armed forces and civil services. During World War II, the mill worked around the clock producing military blankets and army greatcoats. However, by late 1943, as wartime demand subsided and the end of colonial rule approached, Albert Raymond sought to return to England. In Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, Lala Kailashpat Singhania—a titan of the storied J.K. Organisation industrial family that traced its entrepreneurial roots to the 19th century—recognized an extraordinary opportunity to build an indigenous Indian textile power. In 1944, Kailashpat Singhania acquired the Raymond Woollen Mill for approximately ₹30 lakh. Rejecting low-margin army blankets, Singhania invested in modern European worsted spinning and combing machinery, importing the finest virgin merino wool fleeces from Australia. In 1958, Raymond opened its first exclusive retail showroom in Mumbai (at King's Way, Ballard Estate), pioneering the concept of branded fabric retail in India and establishing a trusted national icon.
