Dhirubhai Ambani
Co-founder 1966Background
Dhirubhai Ambani was born in Gujarat and built his early commercial instincts far from India's old industrial houses. His work in Aden exposed him to port trade, commodities, pricing spreads, shipping discipline, and the importance of working capital. When he returned to India, he did not have the inherited mill capacity or family balance sheet associated with established business groups. What he had was an ability to read supply shortages, cultivate distributors, manage credit, and communicate ambition to ordinary investors. Those skills shaped Reliance's first business in textile and polyester-yarn trading. Ambani's background also made him unusually comfortable with public-market storytelling, which later helped Reliance build a large retail shareholder base through its 1977 IPO and subsequent capital raises.
