Company History
Founded 2011 in Luxembourg City, Luxembourg
In early 2011, Nejc Kodrič and Damijan Merlak, two young computer science and software enthusiasts from Kranj, Slovenia, were fascinated by the revolutionary potential of Bitcoin. At the time, the overwhelming majority of global Bitcoin trading flowed through Mt. Gox in Japan. However, moving euros from European banks to Japan was an expensive, agonizingly slow nightmare that took weeks, and Mt. Gox's website constantly crashed. Kodrič and Merlak realized that Europe desperately needed its own local, trustworthy Bitcoin exchange. Pooling €1,000 of their own savings and buying a single server, they incorporated Bitstamp in August 2011, operating out of a small garage in Kranj. The founders personally wrote the matching engine, handled customer support emails, and manually reconciled European SEPA bank wire transfers. As Mt. Gox succumbed to catastrophic management failures and theft, Bitstamp's reputation for absolute honesty spread across Europe. In 2013, Dan Morehead of Pantera Capital visited the founders in Slovenia and led a landmark $10 million Series A round. Recognizing that long-term survival required regulatory legitimacy, Kodrič moved Bitstamp's corporate headquarters to Luxembourg, spending two patient years working with the Ministry of Finance to secure an official EU financial institution license in 2016, permanently establishing Bitstamp as the institutional gateway for digital assets in Europe.
Since its establishment in 2011, Bitstamp expanded from an early-stage venture into a recognized leader in Cryptocurrency Exchange, Regulated Digital Asset Custody, Institutional Prime Brokerage & FinTech, overcoming key market challenges.
Over its history, Bitstamp executed decisive strategic pivots toward scalable monetization and digital distribution, securing its current market leadership.
By continually modernizing operations and embracing workflow automation, Bitstamp maintains resilience through changing technological and economic cycles.
