Company History
Founded 2012 in Road Town, Tortola, British Virgin Islands
In late 2012, Raphael Nicolle, a French IT developer fascinated by Bitcoin's decentralized ethos, began writing code for a peer-to-peer margin lending platform that would allow Bitcoin holders to earn interest by lending funds to leveraged traders. Nicolle launched Bitfinex as a rudimentary web wrapper around the open-source Bitcoinica platform. In early 2013, Giancarlo Devasini—a former plastic surgeon from Milan, Italy, who had left medicine in the 1990s to build a multi-hundred-million-dollar computer hardware distribution empire across Europe—recognized the monumental transformative potential of Bitcoin. Devasini partnered with Nicolle, invested capital, and brought in veteran Dutch financial executive Jan Ludovicus (JL) van der Velde as Chief Executive Officer. Devasini completely re-architected Bitfinex: hiring world-class distributed systems engineers, establishing institutional banking relationships, and writing a proprietary matching engine capable of executing complex algorithmic trade orders. In 2014, Devasini and his team co-founded Tether (originally Realcoin), inventing the modern fiat-backed stablecoin (USDT) to solve the chronic challenge of moving dollars between global exchanges. Together, Bitfinex and Tether engineered the primary liquidity arteries of the entire cryptocurrency ecosystem.
Since its establishment in 2012, Bitfinex expanded from an early-stage venture into a recognized leader in Cryptocurrency Exchange, Digital Asset Derivatives, Peer-to-Peer Margin Funding, Blockchain Infrastructure & Web3, overcoming key market challenges.
Over its history, Bitfinex executed decisive strategic pivots toward scalable monetization and digital distribution, securing its current market leadership.
By continually modernizing operations and embracing workflow automation, Bitfinex maintains resilience through changing technological and economic cycles.
