Company History
Founded 2017 in Mahé, Victoria, Seychelles
In 2013, Mingxing 'Star' Xu, a brilliant physics and computer science graduate from the University of Science and Technology Beijing who had worked as an algorithmic search engineer at Yahoo and Chief Technology Officer of Chinese social network DocIn, recognized the revolutionary economic potential of Bitcoin. Xu founded Okcoin in Beijing, which quickly grew into one of China's largest early spot Bitcoin exchanges. However, as the digital asset space matured, sophisticated professional traders demanded high-speed derivatives, futures contracts, and options to hedge volatility—products that traditional spot exchanges could not support. In 2017, Xu launched OKEx in Hong Kong and Seychelles as a standalone derivatives exchange engineered for institutional quantitative finance. Despite China's subsequent regulatory bans on crypto trading, Xu relocated operations internationally, assembling a world-class team of distributed systems engineers and Wall Street derivatives architects. In 2020, OKX rolled out its revolutionary Unified Account system, eliminating the friction of transferring capital between spot and futures balances. In 2022, under the visionary stewardship of Star Xu and President Hong Fang, OKX rebranded to embrace decentralized self-custody, launching the OKX Web3 Wallet and building X Layer, transforming an offshore trading pit into a planetary Web3 super-power.
Since its establishment in 2017, OKX expanded from an early-stage venture into a recognized leader in Cryptocurrency Derivatives, Global Digital Asset Exchange, Web3 Non-Custodial Wallets & Layer-2 Blockchains, overcoming key market challenges.
Over its history, OKX executed decisive strategic pivots toward scalable monetization and digital distribution, securing its current market leadership.
By continually modernizing operations and embracing workflow automation, OKX maintains resilience through changing technological and economic cycles.
