Founded 2017 in Victoria, Mahé, Seychelles
In early 2013, Michael Gan, a senior technical expert at Alibaba's financial affiliate Ant Financial, and Eric Don, a senior architect at several internet startups, became fascinated by Satoshi Nakamoto's Bitcoin whitepaper. Gan and Don recognized that blockchain technology would create an alternative, decentralized global financial system. However, when they attempted to purchase Bitcoin on early exchanges like Mt. Gox, they were horrified by how clunky, insecure, and user-hostile the platforms were: deposits took days, interfaces crashed during volatility, and customer support was non-existent. Sitting in a cafe in Hangzhou, Gan and Don began writing the code for an ultra-fast, high-concurrency exchange matching engine capable of processing millions of transactions per second. In mid-2017, joined by marketing and business strategist Johnny Lyu, the founders formally incorporated KuCoin, establishing global headquarters in the crypto-friendly jurisdiction of the Seychelles. In September 2017, KuCoin launched its public trading platform alongside the KuCoin Token (KCS), which introduced an unprecedented community revenue-sharing model: returning 50% of the platform's daily trading fee profits directly to KCS token holders as a daily bonus. The generous community model and rapid listing of hidden-gem altcoins sparked viral global adoption across Telegram, Reddit, and Twitter, propelling KuCoin into the top tier of world cryptocurrency exchanges.
