Company History
Founded 2017 in George Town, Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands
In 2013, Changpeng Zhao (CZ)—a computer science graduate from McGill University in Montreal who had spent years building high-frequency futures trading software for the Tokyo Stock Exchange and Bloomberg Tradebook—was playing poker in Shanghai with Ron Cao, managing director of Lightspeed China Partners, and Bobby Lee, CEO of BTC China. They convinced CZ to read the Bitcoin whitepaper. CZ was instantly converted: he sold his Shanghai apartment in 2014 for $1 million to buy Bitcoin at $600. CZ went on to serve as Head of Development at Blockchain.info and CTO at OKCoin. In June 2017, as the Initial Coin Offering (ICO) boom ignited, CZ recognized that existing exchanges were terrible: they were slow, experienced frequent downtime during market rallies, supported only a handful of tokens, and charged exorbitant fees. CZ and co-founder Yi He wrote the Binance whitepaper in thirty-eight days. In July 2017, they raised $15 million in an ICO selling BNB tokens at 10 cents each. When Binance launched on July 14, 2017, its matching engine processed 1.4 million orders per second with zero lag. Just weeks later, in September 2017, the Chinese government banned crypto exchanges. Instead of folding, CZ and Yi He packed their laptops, evacuated their team to Tokyo, and made Binance a truly global, remote-first, decentralized enterprise. Within six months, Binance became the #1 crypto exchange in the world by trading volume, a title it has never relinquished.
Since its establishment in 2017, Binance expanded from an early-stage venture into a recognized leader in Cryptocurrency Exchange, Blockchain Infrastructure, Web3 Ecosystem, Digital Asset Derivatives & FinTech, overcoming key market challenges.
Over its history, Binance executed decisive strategic pivots toward scalable monetization and digital distribution, securing its current market leadership.
By continually modernizing operations and embracing workflow automation, Binance maintains resilience through changing technological and economic cycles.
