Founded 2014 in New York City, New York, United States
In the summer of 2012, Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss—famed Harvard graduates, 2008 Beijing Olympic rowers, and early tech venture capitalists—were vacationing on the island of Ibiza. At a beach club, a mutual acquaintance introduced them to an eccentric computer programmer who began explaining an experimental mathematical currency called Bitcoin. Intrigued by the idea of an incorruptible, digital gold with a fixed supply of 21 million units, the twins began researching the protocol upon returning to New York. Convinced that Bitcoin was destined to become the greatest monetary innovation since the invention of the internet, they began buying coins in late 2012 through BitInstant and local OTC brokers, accumulating approximately 1% of all Bitcoins in existence for an average price of under $10 per coin. However, when Mt. Gox imploded in early 2014, the twins realized that Bitcoin would never achieve institutional adoption by Wall Street pensions and family offices without a legally chartered, transparent US institution. In 2014, Cameron and Tyler founded Gemini in Manhattan, hiring veteran banking compliance officers from the New York Stock Exchange and Morgan Stanley. For eighteen months, they worked alongside NYDFS Superintendent Benjamin Lawsky, designing strict anti-money laundering and cold-storage protocols. On October 5, 2015, Gemini officially opened its doors as a fully regulated New York trust company, executing its first trades and paving the way for the institutional adoption of cryptocurrency.
