Bitstamp (Bitstamp Ltd / Bitstamp Europe SA) is the grand statesman and longest-running institutional survivor of the global cryptocurrency industry. Founded in August 2011 in Kranj, Slovenia, by visionary computer enthusiasts Nejc Kodrič and Damijan Merlak with just two laptops and €1,000 in personal savings, Bitstamp was created to provide a safe, honest, and reliable European alternative to Mt. Gox—the Tokyo exchange that then monopolized Bitcoin trading. In an era when crypto platforms operated in legal gray zones, Bitstamp made the defining strategic choice to pursue formal government regulation. Relocating to the United Kingdom and later Luxembourg, Bitstamp made history in April 2016 when it became the world's very first cryptocurrency exchange to be granted a formal European Union Payment Institution license by Luxembourg's Commission de Surveillance du Secteur Financier (CSSF), making Bitcoin trading passportable across all 28 EU member states. Operating continuously through every crypto winter and bull cycle without ever suspending customer withdrawals, Bitstamp built an unblemished reputation for institutional integrity. Following its acquisition by Robinhood Markets in 2024 for $200 million, Bitstamp powers international digital asset operations for millions of users worldwide under Global CEO Jean-Baptiste Graftieaux.
Bitstamp operates a trusted, regulated exchange and B2B white-label infrastructure monetization model: charging tiered maker and taker transaction fees on spot trading pairs (ranging from 0.00% to 0.40% based on 30-day volume), fiat deposit and withdrawal wire processing fees (SEPA, ACH, SWIFT), institutional crypto-as-a-service API licensing fees to retail banks and fintechs (Bitstamp-as-a-Service), and staking yield commission spreads on Ethereum and Algorand via Bitstamp Earn.
Bitstamp navigates intense fee compression from unregulated offshore derivatives platforms, adapting to stringent European Union Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulatory mandates, and managing transition integration following its acquisition by Robinhood Markets.
Jean-Baptiste Graftieaux currently leads Bitstamp, overseeing strategic vision, balance sheet health, and organizational execution in Cryptocurrency Exchange, Regulated Digital Asset Custody, Institutional Prime Brokerage & FinTech.
Under executive direction, Bitstamp is prioritizing workflow automation alongside disciplined capital allocation to maximize shareholder value.
Leadership at Bitstamp has historically navigated industry cycles by restructuring operational priorities and expanding competitive moats.
