Company History
Founded 1981 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, United Kingdom
The origins of The Sage Group trace back to 1981 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. David Goldman was managing his family's commercial printing business, Campbell Graphics. Frustrated by the laborious manual process of estimating print job costs and balancing ledger books, Goldman sought to automate his company's accounting using the newly emerging microcomputer. He partnered with Newcastle University computer science student Graham Wylie, who was working on a summer software project under the supervision of computer scientist Paul Muller. Wylie wrote an automated estimating and accounting program specifically for Campbell Graphics on an early personal computer. Recognizing that hundreds of thousands of small businesses throughout Britain suffered from the exact same bookkeeping nightmare, Goldman, Muller, and Wylie founded Sage in 1981 to sell off-the-shelf financial software, launching a revolution in computerized business administration.
David Goldman was the founding commercial visionary and longtime Chairman of The Sage Group. Frustrated by the paperwork in his family printing firm, Goldman commissioned Newcastle University student Graham Wylie to write accounting software in 1981. Goldman recognized that small businesses across the globe faced identical accounting hurdles, leading Sage through its rapid expansion and 1989 London Stock Exchange listing until his retirement in 1997.
Graham Wylie was the co-founder and chief software architect of The Sage Group. Wylie coded the first automated accounting program for David Goldman on a personal computer in 1981. As Sage's technical leader for over two decades, Wylie engineered the scalable modular architecture that established Sage as the dominant accounting software across Britain, retiring from the company in 2003 as one of the UK's most successful tech entrepreneurs.
Paul Muller co-founded The Sage Group in 1981 alongside David Goldman and Graham Wylie. Muller provided critical systems architecture guidance, ensuring that early Sage software was engineered with robust algorithmic integrity capable of supporting complex corporate ledgers on early microcomputers.
