Founding Story

The origins of Rubrik trace back to late 2013, when venture capitalist and former Oracle distributed systems engineer Bipul Sinha recognized that corporate data backup was one of the most neglected segments in enterprise technology. Global corporations were spending billions on complex, multi-tiered architectures consisting of third-party backup software (Veritas NetBackup, Commvault), dedicated media servers, catalog databases, and secondary target deduplication appliances (EMC Data Domain). These legacy architectures were not only operationally fragile but also lacked native security, leaving backup catalogs highly vulnerable to ransomware adversaries who deliberately deleted backups before encrypting production databases. Sinha partnered with top distributed systems architects Arvind Nithrakashyap (co-founder of Oracle Exadata), Soham Mazumdar (Google infrastructure engineer who co-authored Google's Borg cluster manager), and Arvind Jain (Google Distinguished Engineer) to build a converged, software-defined scale-out data platform. Incorporating in January 2014, the team engineered the Atlas file system—a proprietary, append-only, zero-trust file system that treats stored backup data as logically air-gapped and immune to modification. Rubrik expanded rapidly through blue-chip venture backing from Lightspeed Venture Partners, Greylock, and Khosla Ventures. In 2021, Microsoft made a strategic equity investment in Rubrik to co-engineer Zero Trust cloud data security for Microsoft 365 and Azure. In April 2024, Rubrik listed on the New York Stock Exchange under ticker symbol 'RBRK', raising $752 million.

Role at Rubrik

Bipul Sinha is the Co-Founder, Chairman, and Chief Executive Officer of Rubrik. Raised in Bihar, India, Sinha earned a Bachelor of Technology in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur and an MBA from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Beginning his engineering career at Tata-IBM and American Megatrends, he spent nearly a decade at Oracle leading distributed systems and database infrastructure teams where he authored dozens of patents. Transitioning into venture capital, Sinha served as a Partner at Lightspeed Venture Partners, leading foundational investments and serving on the boards of enterprise disruptors including Nutanix and PernixData. Recognizing that enterprise backup was a broken, thirty-year-old silo vulnerable to modern cyberattacks, Sinha incubated Rubrik inside Lightspeed's Menlo Park offices in 2014, steering the company through rapid hypergrowth, a successful $752 million NYSE IPO in April 2024, and its evolution into a premier Zero Trust data security platform.

Role at Rubrik

Arvind Nithrakashyap is Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer of Rubrik, directing the company's global engineering organization, core architecture, and long-term technological vision. Nithrakashyap graduated with an engineering degree from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras and earned his Master of Science in Computer Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Before co-founding Rubrik in 2014, he spent more than twelve years at Oracle Corporation, where he served as Principal Engineer and played a seminal role as a co-founding architect of Oracle Exadata—Oracle's flagship engineered database system. At Rubrik, Nithrakashyap co-architected the Atlas distributed file system, establishing Rubrik's proprietary immutable storage fabric and ensuring that backup copies cannot be modified, encrypted, or deleted by ransomware.

Role at Rubrik

Arvind Jain co-founded Rubrik in January 2014, serving as its early Vice President of Engineering and helping establish its scalable distributed systems architecture. Jain earned his Bachelor of Technology in Computer Science and Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, followed by a Master's degree in Computer Science from the University of Washington. Jain spent over a decade as a Distinguished Engineer at Google, where he led fundamental initiatives in web search infrastructure, YouTube edge caching, and Google Chrome performance. Prior to Google, he was a founding engineer at Riverbed Technology, architecting wide-area network (WAN) optimization algorithms. After successfully scaling Rubrik's initial engineering org and platform delivery, Jain went on to found Glean, the enterprise workplace generative AI search company.

Role at Rubrik

Soham Mazumdar co-founded Rubrik in 2014, serving as a core systems architect responsible for designing the platform's distributed consensus and indexing engines. Mazumdar earned his Bachelor of Technology in Computer Science from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur and completed graduate studies in Computer Science at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. At Google, Mazumdar was a principal architect behind the company's next-generation disk-based search indexing infrastructure. In 2011, he co-founded Tagtile, a mobile customer loyalty and marketing platform that was acquired by Facebook in 2012. Joining forces with Sinha, Nithrakashyap, and Jain, Mazumdar applied web-scale search and metadata indexing principles to backup repositories, enabling instant file-level search and granular recovery across petabytes of enterprise data.
