Founding Story

In 1953, Dutch conglomerate Philips established its semiconductor manufacturing division in Nijmegen, Netherlands, to manufacture germanium transistors for radios and telecommunications. Over five decades, Philips Semiconductors pioneered audio chips, television integrated circuits, and invented I2C bus architecture. In 2006, Philips spun off the semiconductor division to a consortium of private equity investors (KKR, Bain Capital, Silver Lake), renaming the independent company NXP (standing for 'Next Experience') before listing on NASDAQ in 2010.
