Cerebras was founded in 2015 by Andrew Feldman, Gary Lauterbach, Michael James, Sean Lie, and Jean-Philippe Fricker in Sunnyvale, California. Feldman and Lauterbach had previously founded SeaMicro, an innovative microserver startup that invented high-density energy-efficient server clustering and was acquired by AMD in 2012 for $334 million. While watching the emergence of deep learning neural networks in 2014, the founders recognized that GPUs—originally invented to render polygons for video games—were horribly mismatched for AI workloads because moving data across printed circuit boards choked performance. Asking what seemed like an impossible question: 'Why don't we build a chip the size of an entire silicon wafer?', the team partnered with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). Over five years of secretive R&D, Cerebras solved unprecedented thermodynamic, material expansion, and lithographic alignment challenges, creating the first successful wafer-scale processor in human history and redefining computer architecture. In early 2015, sitting around a conference table in Los Altos, Andrew Feldman, Gary Lauterbach, and Sean Lie asked a radical question: 'If we could build any computer chip we wanted to accelerate deep learning, what would it look like?' Lauterbach immediately answered: 'It would be the size of a pizza, an entire silicon wafer.' While previous generations had dismissed wafer-scale computing as a fantasy, the founders realized that deep learning neural networks could tolerate silicon defects if the chip was engineered with reconfigurable mesh routing. Armed with that foundational breakthrough, they incorporated Cerebras Systems, launching the greatest architectural leap in semiconductor history.
