Zapier was founded in Columbia, Missouri in 2011 by Wade Foster, Bryan Helmig, and Mike Knoop. Foster worked in marketing, Helmig was a web developer and jazz musician, and Knoop was an engineer. While working with various clients, they repeatedly encountered the same frustrating obstacle: small businesses used great cloud tools like PayPal, Salesforce, and Mailchimp, but these tools were completely isolated silos. Business owners spent hours manually copying and pasting customer data between systems, or had to pay thousands of dollars to software consultants to write custom API integrations. Over a weekend hackathon, the trio built a working prototype that allowed an event in one web service to trigger an action in another. In 2012, they were accepted into Y Combinator's Summer 2012 batch. After raising a single $1.3 million seed round, they committed to building a profitable, sustainable business, deciding to operate as a 100% remote company long before the concept became mainstream. By 2014, Zapier was cash-flow positive, scaling through organic word-of-mouth and programmatic SEO into a multi-billion-dollar automation empire. In October 2011, Wade Foster, Bryan Helmig, and Mike Knoop met at a Startup Weekend hackathon in Columbia, Missouri. Foster was working in digital marketing, constantly frustrated that he had to manually export customer leads from PayPal into Mailchimp. Helmig and Knoop, both talented engineers, spent 54 consecutive hours writing a visual script that linked PayPal's API to Mailchimp's API.
