Company History
Founded 2013 in San Francisco, California, United States
Webflow was founded in 2013 by Russian-immigrant brothers Vlad Magdalin and Sergie Magdalin alongside engineer Bryant Chou. Vlad Magdalin had immigrated to the United States as a child from the Soviet Union and taught himself computer programming. While working as a software engineer at Intuit and freelancing as an agency web designer, Vlad noticed a maddening, repetitive inefficiency: designers spent days creating gorgeous pixel-perfect visual mockups in Photoshop, only to hand them over to developers who took weeks to write the HTML and CSS—frequently losing the soul of the original design in translation. Between 2005 and 2012, Vlad tried to build software to solve this problem three separate times, failing twice and accumulating over $60,000 in personal credit card debt while supporting a young family. In late 2012, with modern web browsers finally adopting CSS3 and HTML5, Vlad teamed up with his brother Sergie (a talented visual designer) and Bryant Chou (a brilliant systems engineer). In early 2013, they built an interactive browser prototype and posted a demo to Hacker News. The post exploded to the top of the site, generating 25,000 beta signups in 24 hours. Accepted into Y Combinator's Summer 2013 batch on their final try, the founders incorporated Webflow. By refusing to compromise on professional code quality and teaching thousands of designers how code worked through the acclaimed 'Webflow University', the founders turned a triple-failure idea into a $4.0 billion global icon. In late 2012, in a cramped apartment in Sacramento, California, Vlad Magdalin sat staring at a stack of overdue credit card bills. Having immigrated to America from the Soviet Union as a child, Magdalin was determined to achieve the American dream. But after three consecutive rejections from Y Combinator, his startup was on the verge of liquidation. He had $60,000 in personal debt, a wife, and two young daughters to support. On a Sunday evening in March 2013, Vlad posted a short video demo of Webflow to Hacker News. When he woke up the next morning, the post had shot to #1, crashed their server, and collected 20,000 developer signups. That miraculous viral launch saved Webflow, proving that immigrant perseverance and visionary engineering could revolutionize how humanity builds for the web.
Vlad Magdalin is the co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Webflow, Inc. In 2012, alongside his brother Sergie Magdalin and systems engineer Bryant Chou, Magdalin founded Webflow with an audacious vision: to eliminate the barrier between visual design and software coding. Enduring three consecutive rejections from Y Combinator and maxing out personal credit cards, Magdalin guided Webflow through a historic turnaround. Under his visionary, deeply empathetic leadership, Webflow grew into a $4.0 billion technology titan generating over $160 million in annual revenue, serving millions of users and Global 2000 enterprises. Magdalin is universally celebrated as the pioneer of the global No-Code movement. Magdalin's humble, deeply empathetic leadership established him as the beloved spiritual father of the global No-Code movement. An immigrant who fought through three YC rejections and maxed-out credit cards, Magdalin championed radical transparency, customer co-design, and ethical leadership. Under his guidance, Webflow grew from a desperate Hacker News post into a $4.0 billion software conglomerate past $160M ARR, proving that visual software could empower millions of human beings to build their dreams on the World Wide Web.
Sergie Magdalin is a co-founder and former Chief Design Officer of Webflow. A gifted visual artist and user interface designer, Sergie was the creative genius who designed the Webflow Designer interface. At Webflow, Sergie translated complex CSS box models, flexbox properties, and grid systems into an intuitive, elegant visual user interface that feels natural to graphic designers, establishing Webflow's reputation for exceptional design craftsmanship. At Webflow, Sergie designed the visual iconography, typography scales, and intuitive canvas interactions of the Webflow Designer. His artistic discipline ensured that complex CSS flexbox properties and 3D camera angles were translated into an accessible visual interface that graphic designers fell in love with, establishing Webflow's reputation for exceptional design craftsmanship.
Bryant Chou is a co-founder and former Chief Technology Officer of Webflow. An exceptional systems architect, Chou partnered with the Magdalin brothers to turn their visual web dream into high-performance cloud software. At Webflow, Chou architected the visual-to-AST compiler that generates clean semantic HTML5 and CSS, engineered the global edge hosting infrastructure on Fastly and AWS, and guided the early technical scaling of the platform. At Webflow, Chou engineered the core compiler and cloud infrastructure that converts visual canvas actions into pristine semantic HTML5 and CSS in real time. His architectural mastery established the multi-region edge hosting network on Fastly and AWS that serves billions of monthly pageviews with sub-50ms latency, proving that visual web development could achieve enterprise-grade performance.
