Company History
Founded 2019 in San Francisco, California, United States
In 2018-2019, Edo Liberty was leading Amazon AI Labs, where he directed advanced research and machine learning infrastructure across Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Amazon SageMaker. Prior to Amazon, Liberty spent seven years at Yahoo Research as a senior research director leading the scalable machine learning research group. Throughout his career, Liberty observed that modern machine learning models—whether powering Amazon's e-commerce recommendations, Yahoo's search ranking, or speech recognition in Alexa—relied on embeddings. Yet, while software developers had relational databases like PostgreSQL for structured data and Elasticsearch for text keywords, there was no dedicated database built specifically for embeddings. As Liberty foresaw the emergence of transformer-based language models like BERT and GPT, he realized that embeddings would become the primary data representation for all software. In 2019, Liberty left Amazon and founded Pinecone in San Francisco. Backed by Peter Wagner at Wing Venture Capital, Liberty spent two years in stealth building a proprietary vector indexing engine capable of sub-50ms nearest neighbor search across billions of vectors. In 2021, Pinecone emerged from stealth; when OpenAI released ChatGPT in late 2022 and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) became the dominant architecture for generative AI, Pinecone became the breakout infrastructure darling of the generative AI revolution.
Since its establishment in 2019, Pinecone expanded from an early-stage venture into a recognized leader in Vector Database, AI Infrastructure, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), Vector Search, Semantic Embeddings, Developer Tools, overcoming key market challenges.
Over its history, Pinecone executed decisive strategic pivots toward scalable monetization and digital distribution, securing its current market leadership.
By continually modernizing operations and embracing workflow automation, Pinecone maintains resilience through changing technological and economic cycles.
