Company History
Founded 2022 in New York City, New York, United States & London, United Kingdom
Piotr Dabkowski and Mati Staniszewski grew up together in Poland, sharing a passion for mathematics and computer science. While watching American movies translated on Polish television—where a single male narrator read every line of dialogue over the original soundtrack in a flat monotone—the friends frequently debated why computers could not synthesize human voices with natural emotion. Dabkowski went on to study mathematics and computer science at the University of Cambridge before joining Google in London as a core machine learning engineer, while Staniszewski studied mathematics at the London School of Economics and joined Palantir Technologies as an enterprise deployment strategist. In early 2022, seeing that advances in transformer models could be applied to discrete audio tokenization, Dabkowski and Staniszewski re-united to launch ElevenLabs, developing their first model prototype in a London flat before catching the attention of tech luminaries Nat Friedman and Daniel Gross.
The early days of ElevenLabs in late 2021 and early 2022 were characterized by tireless research and development inside a modest London apartment. Piotr Dabkowski spent nights coding custom CUDA kernels and training prototypes on borrowed GPU instances, while Mati Staniszewski built financial models and reached out to prospective publishing clients. When their initial demo was shared with prominent Silicon Valley investors Nat Friedman and Daniel Gross, the realism of the synthesized voice was so shocking that the investors immediately flew to London to co-lead the company pre-seed round.
Mati Staniszewski is the co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of ElevenLabs. An astute commercial strategist with a deep background in enterprise scaling, Staniszewski recognized that voice would become the primary interface for next-generation human-machine interaction. Under Staniszewski's executive leadership, ElevenLabs scaled from a two-person startup into a $1.1 billion unicorn in less than 24 months, securing partnerships with HarperCollins, Time Magazine, and global gaming companies while establishing the Voice Library creator economy.
Piotr Dabkowski is the co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of ElevenLabs. A world-renowned deep learning researcher and systems engineer, Dabkowski authored the mathematical foundation of ElevenLabs' context-aware speech synthesis models and real-time streaming architectures. At ElevenLabs, Dabkowski directs global research across acoustic neural codecs, low-latency conversational audio inference, and multilingual speech translation, driving the technical breakthroughs that make ElevenLabs the global gold standard in voice AI.
